Labor Council Statement on Local Jobs Policy Proposal

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - Tuesday, January 12, 2010

Statement by Labor Council Secretary-Treasurer/CEO Lorena Gonzalez on City Council President Ben Hueso’s Proposed Local Jobs Policy

SAN DIEGO - (January 12, 2010) - "The San Diego Labor Council applauds Council President Ben Hueso for introducing a policy to require local workers to be put to work on City of San Diego projects that use city taxpayer dollars.

"With unemployment at over 10 percent in San Diego, our leaders are faced with a challenge to make sure that the taxpayer money they are entrusted with is used most effectively in turning around the local economy. The Council President's proposal meets that challenge.

"By adopting this policy, the City of San Diego can ensure that our local economy gets the best bang for its buck by keeping taxpayer money in the community and by allowing a hand up for returning veterans and the San Diego communities that need the most help during these trying economic times."
