San Diego City Councilmembers Toni Atkins, Ben Hueso, Scott Peters and Tony Young have been named April Legislative Heroes of the Month for their participation in the Journey for Better Jobs.
The event, which featured nearly 1,000 union members walking through the streets of Downtown San Diego, kicked off at the San Diego Convention Center. There, Council President Peters addressed the crowd on the importance of business working with labor to ensure that all San Diegans are able to provide for themselves and their families.
From there, the Journey moved to the Wells Fargo building at 5th Ave. and B St. Councilman Hueso spoke about the need for the elimination of poverty wages for the janitors that keep the area office buildings clean.
The next stop at Civic Center Plaza, just steps from City Hall and the City Attorney’s office, featured Councilman Young telling the crowd that city workers should not be blamed for the mismanagement of past leaders.
Later in the afternoon, Councilwoman Atkins closed the day’s events by encouraging participants to continue the struggle, because someday all of San Diego’s workforce will be treated with the dignity and respect they deserve.
The 120,000 working families of the San Diego-Imperial Counties Labor Council thank these four City Councilmembers for courageously standing up to the opposing institutions and beside those workers who fight for what is right.
