Labor’s Legislative Hero of the Month

Republican San Diego City Councilman Brian Maienschein

Republican San Diego City Councilman Brian Maienschein has been named the September Legislative Hero of the Month.

Councilman Maienschein ensured that companies can’t win city contracts just because they pay less in health care than the city.

While Councilman Maienschein has never been a strong vote for working families, we applaud him for voting his conscience and ensuring that outsourcing does not result in a race to the bottom where contractors make more money while workers lose basic benefits such as health care.

Councilman Maienschein bucked Republican pressure to hold the Mayor’s line of fast-tracking privatization.  Even as other Republicans refused to vote to ensure that workers’ receiving health care is more important than an increase in contractor profits, Councilman Maienschein did the right thing by voting to amend the municipal code to include language that protects workers’ health care.

It just goes to show that even those who are not always with us will occasionally do the right thing.
Even though Councilman Maienschein hasn’t sided with working families too often, we’re happy to see him go out on a limb and stand up for this important protection for employees.

The 120,000 members of the San Diego and Imperial Counties Labor Council thank Councilman Brian Maienschein for standing beside working families in demanding that city contractors not turn a profit at the expense of health care.
