During the past couple of weeks the Labor Council has been besieged by congratulatory messages stemming from Labor’s victories on Election Day.

While the staff at the Labor Council appreciates the enthusiasm, the truth is that we could not have been successful without the support of all our local unions and volunteers who ensured that Labor-endorsed candidates came out on top.

The wins were made possible with the help of nearly 1,500 individual union members who volunteered for 4,000 shifts during the course of the election season. That total represents 16,000 hours of volunteer time dedicated to informing voters which candidates support working families.

I want to thank and recognize every union member who helped our endorsed candidates win.  They are the ones who sacrificed countless weekends, holidays and evenings to make a difference in their communities.

With the support and effort we received from our volunteers, the staff at the Labor Council was confident that the candidates we supported would have a good chance at winning as soon as results started coming back at 8 p.m. on Election Day. We were right!

With the election of Barack Obama for President, three new allies on the San Diego City Council, two strong supporters in Chula Vista, and the victories of Marty Block and Manuel Perez in the State Assembly, the election not only showed that our hard work paid off, but that working families were will have friends looking out for them in elected office.

Voters went to the polls not to point fingers blame the trash collector for San Diego’s woes, but to find real solutions to the challenges that face our neighborhoods and our economy.

This couldn’t have been accomplished without the sacrifices made by union members who volunteered.
To show our appreciation, the Labor Council will host a special barbecue for all volunteers on Dec. 10 at 5 p.m., prior to the Delegates Meeting*.

Whether you phone banked for one night, or served as a precinct captain throughout the campaign, come enjoy the fruits of your hard work with others who did the same.

*Due to a scheduling conflict, this month’s meeting will be held at UFCW Local 135 at 2001 Camino del Rio South, San Diego, CA 92108.
