Endorsement Process for 2010 Election Season Kicks Off as Interviews are Scheduled
The Labor Council kicked off the 2010 election season recently as dozens of candidates began undergoing the process for winning the Labor’s endorsement.
Candidates from the 76th State Assembly District and 53rd Congressional District interviewed with union members in August, the first endorsement interviews of the 2010 election cycle.
Recommendations made following those interviews are forwarded to the Labor Council’s executive board and delegates for confirmation, with each step in the process requiring a two-thirds vote by those present in order to proceed.
In the past two months, more than 100 candidates have attended a Labor 101 session to learn about the issues affecting the region’s union members.
In past years it was recommended that candidates attend a Labor 101 session, however, candidates now must attend in order to receive a questionnaire. Once candidates have completed and returned a questionnaire, they are brought before union members for an interview.
While every union member is welcome to attend an endorsement interview, only members designated in writing by the chief executive of a local union are eligible to vote on behalf of a union. Contact your local union to make sure one of your union’s designees is planning to accompany you at an interview.
Upcoming endorsement interviews scheduled include San Diego City Council on Sept. 8.
In August, the Labor Council endorsed Congresswoman Susan Davis and Toni Atkins for State Assembly.
Please contact Anthony Saavedra at (619) 228-8101, ext. 6 or asaavedra@unionyes.org if you would like to attend an interview.
