Labor’s Legislative Hero - Oceanside City Councilwoman Esther Sanchez
The Labor Council is proud to make Esther Sanchez the Legislative Hero for November and December for her work on the Oceanside City Council and to congratulate her on her new position as a California Coastal Commissioner.
Esther has been a chief supporter of workers' rights in Oceanside, where she helped lead the recall campaign against anti-union Councilman Jerome Kern. She took leadership in the campaign after Kern threatened to cut one of the city's ambulances and layoff firefighter paramedics, moves that would put Oceanside's residents public safety at risk.
Esther has been a strong advocate to protect fixed-income housing, a necessity for the many retirees and veterans that live in Oceanside. She has also supported policies that would help create sustainable jobs and protect businesses that provide good pay and health care benefits to their workers.
Esther was also appointed by the Speaker of the Assembly in August to the California Coastal Commission, an agency that will be in charge of deciding the future of San Diego County's coastline development. Union members will have a champion on the Coastal Commission when it comes to making sure that developers are responsible for making sure that the jobs they create are quality jobs that make good careers in construction and the tourism industry.
"Esther is a hard-working leader who is always looking out for local workers," said Lorena Gonzalez, the Secretary-Treasurer and CEO of the Labor Council. "We're lucky to have her fighting for us in Oceanside and at the Coastal Commission."
Congratulations to Esther Sanchez for being named the Labor Council's Legislative Hero for November and December.
