Internal Organizer
United Service Workers West
SEIU United Service Workers West is now hiring Internal Organizer to build power for thousands of service workers in California. Positions are available in San Diego for the Allied and Entertainment Division.
SEIU United Service Workers West is a California state-wide union on the cutting edge of progressive activism, building the power of low-wage workers and engaging in larger social issues such as immigration, health care, and housing. United Service Workers West represents over 35,000 janitors, airport workers, security officers, and other service workers in some of the states most vital industries, such as the commercial real estate, hi-tech, aviation, retail, and entertainment industries. The union is home to the Justice for Janitors, Stand for Security and Airport Workers United campaigns that have successfully improved the lives of thousands of low wage and immigrant workers throughout the country.
Key Responsibilities:
- Identify and develop leadership;
- Organize workers and worksite actions;
- Negotiate smaller contracts, including serving as chief negotiator, as well as coordinating contract campaigns for smaller contracts;
- Perform regular worksite visitations and conduct site meetings;
- Process grievances up to and including arbitration panel presentation and Board of Adjustments and prepare for arbitration;
- Effectively resolve worksite disputes and problems of membership;
- Participate in worker/steward trainings;
- Lead mobilization and turn out for actions and meetings;
- Maintain accurate worksite (building and worker) information;
- Communicate with company supervisors and managers;
- Conduct effective house visits and one on one communication;
- Conduct worker meetings and committee meetingsl;
- Develop and write campaign materials and campaign message to press and public.
Job Requirements:
- Demonstrated commitment to social justice;
- Completely bilingual in Spanish/English, written and verbal (Most positions);
- Strong social, written, and verbal communication skills;
- Motivated self-starter who is also a solid team player;
- Strong computer skills are a plus (Microsoft Word, Excel, Internet, & Access);
- Minimum one year experience in a labor or community organization and/or negotiation experience is a strong plus.

- Salary is competitive and flexible based on prior labor or relevant experience and staff union contract.
