Born and raised in San Ysidro, Sandy Naranjo is a daughter of immigrants. Her father Joseph Naranjo was a proud rank-and-file member of Ironworkers Local 229. Her parents’ struggle of racism, and classism inspired her to be a activist at an early age. In high school she was a member of the Gay-Straight Alliance and participated in a mock same sex marriage in support of marriage equality.

After graduating high school, she attended California State University of San Bernardino. While at California State University San Bernardino, she was involved with Women’s Resource Center, GLBT Center, Feminists United, Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance and participated in actions raising awareness on violence against women by hosting Take back the Night and played a role in the Vagina Monologues.

In addition, she was a member of the Model United Nations, Model Arab League, and an active member of the Coyote Debate team where she had the opportunity to compete in New York City, Antalya, Turkey, Melbourne, Australia and Bangkok, Thailand. She earned three bachelors degrees one in Economics, Political Economy, and Political Science along with a minor in Women’s Studies.

Upon graduation, she interned for Service Employees International Union Local 99 and for United Food and Commercial Workers Local 1167. From there she moved to become a Field Organizer for the San Diego and Imperial Counties Labor Council where she intends to work on behalf of the working class.
