Working Families Celebrate Historic Coalition Efforts Between Labor and Community Groups in San Diego’s Special Election
SAN DIEGO – February 12, 2014 – San Diego and Imperial Counties Labor Council, AFL-CIO Secretary-Treasurer Richard Barrera today released the following statement regarding the 2014 Special Election for San Diego Mayor:
“Today, we celebrate coalition efforts by San Diego’s labor and community groups who worked tirelessly to elect David Alvarez the City’s next Mayor.
“When we endorsed David Alvarez last summer, there were those who thought that he would never make it past the primary. Not only did San Diego voters advance David into the general election – they proved that working families, neighborhoods and middle-class have a future in our City.
“This success would not have been possible without the dedication of hundreds of volunteers united by a common vision of a City where no neighborhoods are left behind and everyone has an opportunity to succeed.
“Our hard work doesn’t end today. This election signals a historic turning point in San Diego and we must continue to build strength in the partnership between workers and community organizations to ameliorate the pervasive problem of income inequality in our region. Together, we will work in the days ahead to rebuild the middle-class by advancing public policy that addresses the needs of working communities.”
